This classic surfing documentary retains its charm, high quality, humor and nostalgia. Bruce Brown’s 1966 Endless Summer was one of the first and remains one of the best documentaries on surfing. It’s a laid-back almost relaxing documentary to watch which occassionally features some awesome displays of surfing pioneers hanging ten on perfect, imperfect and very dangerous waves. Tubes, Pipes, perfect waves, surfing towards, and away from the shore, ridin’ the wave, wipe out. . . it’s all here.

This was a low budget affair, but the camera-work and richness of color is quite impressive. Most of the footage was shot silent with sound-effects and narration and occassional music added later. Don’t expect to hear the Beach Boys, or the Ventures or even Dick Dale on the soundtrack–you won’t. You won’t get MTV fast edits, or occassional messages about pollution, over-population, or politics either.

That’s refreshing.

Most refreshing of all is that you won’t see a lot of ads for sneakers or cars, or sporting goods plastered all over the surfboards or cars of the surfers either. It was a less chaotic, simpler time.

The movie follows two young surfers Robert August and Mike Hynson as they follow Summer around the world. First after leaving their native California and the crowded beaches of Malibu, Santa Cruz and Newport Beach (the Wedge) they travel to Africa and surf places probably no one has ever surfed before (and have to be careful not to step on dangerous and lethal stone fish). The natives are fascinated by the California surfers and their sport. Soon Robert and Mike are giving surf lessons to the natives. They hitch a ride with an African Game Hunter and travel along the coast with a perfect tour guide. They find the perfect wave. In Australia, Mike and Robert don’t have good luck and are told the best time to surf in Australia isn’t in the Summer (which is the U.S.’s late fall, early winter), but in the winter. They have a little better luck in New Zealand, and as they go off to Tahiti they are told there is very little to surf in Tahiti. Ah but there turns out to be plenty to surf in Tahiti. Then Mike and Robert are off to Hawaii for two months where water and air temperatures are 75 degrees.

While there will be a few folks who will find Bruce Brown’s narration (Bruce an early surfing enthusiast wrote, directed, photographed, edited and narrated this film) annoying, most will find his disarming, tongue in cheek humorous laid back narration utterly charming. And there are no contests or points or organized competitions taking place. It’s simply a film about two surfing dudes in 1965 travelling around the world to catch a wave.

28 years later, Bruce Brown would make a well produced sequel to this documentary Endless Summer 2. It’s got better production values, more exciting surfing action…. but it lacks the simple purity of this film.

A gem. If I’ve sparked any positive curiousity in you about this film, you’ll enjoy it. …

Way back in 1966, documentary filmmaker Bruce Brown followed two young surfers around the world in their quest for the perfect wave. It seems as if it were just the three of them - the two surfers and Bruce Brown who filmed that magical year with a hand-held Technicolor camera with no sound. Later, he edited the film and narrated it and his is the only voice we hear in addition to some original music by “The Sandals”. There are no sounds of the surf, no remarks from the two surfers and we never hear the voices of all the colorful characters they meet along the way.

The concept was to surf on beaches that had never been surfed before. This led them Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti. And, naturally California and Hawaii. Sometimes the surf was to their liking. Sometimes it was not. But always it was an adventure, the kind of adventure that I quickly got caught up in even though it all seemed like a home movie and the camera was old fashioned. I remember one spot where there is a long smooth wave to ride and the narrator notes that the wave was so long that he ran out of film, stopped shooting, changed the film, and was able to continue filming the surfer on the same wave.

As the film was made in 1966, it expressed a view of the world that is not politically correct today. For example, there are a lot of little jokes about the “natives” in an African tribe. But in spite of the words, it was obvious that everyone in the tribe enjoyed watching the surfers. Later, with the help of our surfers, these “natives” tried it themselves and soon were improvising their own surfboards.

There are a lot of beaches in the world. But the sport was perfected in Hawaii as pure recreation. That’s the way the Hawaiians lived for centuries. Our two surfers came from California, a place very much influenced by Hawaiian surfers.

Other details about 1966 stood out and made me smile. For example, a luxury hotel in Senegal cost $30 per night, which they thought was outlandishly expensive. Gas cost $1.00 a gallon in Africa, a very high cost. And the hairstyles of the two light-haired and sometimes sunburned surfers were short and slicked back with lots and lots of grease. Also, the bodies of the surfers did not look like the surfers today. The two men had narrow chests and the musculature in their arms and legs was just enough to handle their surfboards. Obviously, they never worked out in a gym. They just rode those waves. And loved every minute of it.

This is a film that was made with the pure love of the sport. It is indeed a classic. And a “must” for anyone interested surfing.

Move on to “Planet Earth” for everything this bluray isn’t…

I normally refrain from posting negative reviews in case it’s a question of taste and I may be in conflict with other people in that respect.

However in this case I am pretty sure this is a title to avoid for everybody. Especially when there is such an alternative as Planet Earth which presents a hundred times the content and imagery this IMAX adaptation strives to deliver.. and fails..

Buy,Download, Or Stream Blue Planet! Click Here

First of all, this is a very lousy transfer. They didn’t bother remastering the 40 minute footage and the “dirt” of the master is visible in every frame. It wouldn’t have taken a large team to edit them out. Frankly it’s the most disappointing bluray transfer I’ve seen out of the 40 or more bluray titles I have.

Secondly, the narration, disjointed topics, duration of many of the space imagery which drag on for minutes without any movement contribute to a mindnumbingly boring viewing experience. You’ll notice you’ll be hardpressed not to forward to the next scene every other minute (and let’s admit it, there are not that many to start with)

There’s also an older similar bonus segment in the bluray, with even worse visuals and mostly resembling SD instead of HD in many places..

In short, I’d strongly suggest you skip this bluray in favor of the stunning Planet Earth if you’ve not grabbed it yet.

I got this for my 4 year old son’s birthday last year because he has a fascination with air planes and I was trying to get him interested in the space program. Let’s just say when I first played it, even my husband stopped what he was doing and came over and sat down. We have a large screen TV and it makes you feel like you are really there! The sounds and colors are vivid. And even when there is no sound, the sights are just so amazing you don’t need it- I think that’s part of it’s magic. Maybe it’s just that space is such an unknown and elusive place, but when it shows the view of our planet from space you just get goosebumps. This is a wonderful dvd to pull out on those rainy/snowy days. No matter how many times we have watched it, it still evokes a sense of awe and reverence.

This movie is based on the Middle Eastern classic Arabian Nights . The Arabian tapestry is felt in genuine form in Lotte’s interpretation. In fact Lotte is very talented when it comes to conjuring up a particular time and place in her other works as well. Lotte is a master of creating a dreamy, hypnotic, universe, out of jointed silhouettes. The moving objects morph perfectly into complex shapes, a magnificent bird into a spellbound woman, a magical palace out of fallen stars. The movie is entrancing, beautiful, and ethereal, not just for the time it was made, but even when you watch it now. There is a mood of fairy tales, other worldly, creativity and a genuine success at telling a story, with paper for crying out loud! After watching this animation, the visions will linger behind your sight like a soft daydream glow of a memory. If you are a current day animator the results of Lotte’s work considering her limited technology, will blow your mind. If you are not an animator, this movie, will blow your mind. Lotte is an integral part of cinematic history. I have a more extensive and lengthy version of this review at my animation blog site here: http://maxanimation.blogspot.com/2005/04/prince-achmed.html which you are invited to visit, read and comment on.

For once there is no ambiguity: “The Adventures of Prince Achmed” is definitely the first feature length animated cartoon. Working in a converted garage, Reininger and her two assistants (one of whom specialized in magical soap bubble effects!) took three years to complete “Achmed.” The film was a success, but for whatever reason Reininger spent the rest of her long career making shorts and advertisements (that I’ve never seen-hint, hint, Milestone). You might think, Hoo boy, an hour of nothing but black silhouettes on white. But give the film half a chance (especially in this magnificently colored restoration, with wonderful musical accompaniment) and I guarantee you’ll be hooked. The complex tale of Achmed, his beloved, the wicked Magician, the kindly and powerful Ogre, the magical flying horse, and all the other characters are animated in a fantastically expressive manner, and the film moves at a breathless but comprehensible pace. This is one you’ll come back to.

I first saw parts of this DVD on PBS and was so intrigued with it, I went immediately to the web site and ordered it. This has to be a ‘must purchase’ for anybody who is wanting to learn what it is like to prepare for a large concert of a major work.

Michael Tilson Thomas brings the viewer much insight as to what he is trying to achieve from his interpretation of this very familiar piece. Little things such as suggesting a different bow movement makes a huge difference in the presentation.

An excellent educational tool, for those who want to learn more of the background of this piece plus a look at the various instruments that are ‘featured’ in this piece.

I highly recommend this and hope this is only the first in a series. ‘Twould be nice to see other orchestras doing this with other presentations as well!

Well Done MTT & SFO

I can’t praise this DVD highly enough for those who are curious about how a conductor and orchestra prepare and put together a performance of a symphonic work, in this case the magnificent Tchaikovsky Fourth Symphony. We get a very generous — and at times humorous, and always genial — narration by Michael Tilson Thomas as he prepares a performance with his orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony (which is surely one of the country’s great orchestras although it is not generally listed, wrongly so in my opinion, with the so-called Big Five American orchestras). We also focus in on several of the individual players to find out how they prepare for the rehearsals. There is also a scene in which the orchestra talks with a group of children about how the orchestra works, and this includes a funny moment where the piccolo player discusses how nervous she gets playing that incredibly difficult solo in the the Tchaikovsky Fourth’s third movement. The rehearsal scenes are then followed by an exciting and fully satisfying live performance of the piece in San Francisco’s marvelous Davies Symphony Hall. Sound and video are first-rate.

I’ve attended many rehearsals of orchestras and this DVD certainly catches the feeling of this intricate and complex team project. I think it would be very enjoyable for anyone interested in this general subject.

Recommended.

There are plenty of reviews here about the movie, so there is no sense in writing another.

This review is about the DVD. I will tell you up front that this DVD looks like a direct copy off VHS. I have seen the VHS version about 2 times this year and when the title song comes on, the audio fades in and out. Not bad, but you can definitely see some age in it. The DVD is EXACTLY the same. The sound is of no higher quality.

There is no widescreen, just a full screen with the same picture quality as VHS. It’s not horrible, but if you are the type of person who buys DVDs for the superior picture quality, you are definitely going to be unhappy with this.

The movie itself is EXCELLENT, I love it, but the DVD transfer from VHS isn’t the best.

As for bonus features, you get bios for all of the actors. The trouble is, the information included is the same as you can find on the internet movie database (imdb) as well as fan sites. If you have read a fair amount on any of the actors and know their biography fairly well, this DVD offers nothing new.

There are also some brief production notes about where and how this movie was done, and some quotes from the cast and crew.

Again, if you have done any research online and gone to any fan sites or even a site dedicated to John Hughes, you will find nothing new here. No interviews, a little behind the scenes, some background detail, but in the big picture, not much else.

Just a forewarning.

I bought the DVD because unlike VHS tapes, a DVD CD doesn’t wear out. But if you watch the VHS version, then the DVD, the quality is the same. DVD is not any better.

So overall, EXCELLENT movie, but not a great transfer. Still, if you are a fan, definitely add it to your collection, but if you buy DVDs for the extras, you will be very disappointed with this.

If you graduated from high school in the 1980s and haven’t seen this film, you must have been locked in a cave.

John Hughes delivers the definitive nostalgic teen movie of the Generation X crowd. The cast made up the ’80s “brat pack” with Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall. It’s hard to believe while seeing this film that Ringwald and Hall were the only real high school aged performers… the others were in their mid to late 20s during filming.

While modern teens may not find this as “sophisticated” as over-sexed comedies like “American Pie,” anyone can appreciate true feelings, teen angst, self doubt and relationships with parents portrayed in this film.

A group of kids sitting for 8 hours in detention on a Saturday none of them will ever forget. While there is foul language, it’s about the same speed as what you can hear on “NYPD Blue” on TV. There is no nudity or sex, just raw, in your face teen angst.

You see this group of “losers,” warts and all, and become friends with all of them before the film is over. The DVD doesn’t offer anything other than cast bios and subtitles… which is a disappointment. It would have been great to have had some interviews with the cast and behind the scenes footage. Nonetheless, DVD is much better than tape and definitely worth the extra $ for a non volitile format.

I know what a lot of people are thinking, OMG, another freakin’ bring it on movie. First of all: The franchise is really a trilogy (1,3,5), 2nd: Give this one a chance, you will be surprised. There were new lines that are repeatable, mostly spoken by the Character Gloria. These movies do present an element of cheese, but let’s face it, that is what makes them fun. You aren’t watching these with the intent in finding a new oscar contender. As soon as it was over, I wanted to watch again, something that I would never say about any of the others, except for the original. The movie finally brought it!!!! The music was good as well. I never heard a Christina Milian song in my life, and now I am looking to buy the soundtrack. It was a mixture of the 1st and 3rd movies brought together with a Step Up feel. I loved it an now i will watch it again!

At First When I started watching it I thought that it was going to be stupid but then after I got into it I really enjoyed it…. I am going to add this to my collection with the rest of them….. But Please No More

I thought this was a great family movie. While it won’t hold the attention of the younger kids, older children will enjoy it. The acting is wonderful, especially the “young lass”, what a great part for her. Too bad about the cynical review earlier, but that’s what I expect from profession movie critics, they are out to pick apart the film itself, where I am looking for entertainment factor for myself and for my family. As for MY family, we thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

Although not Oscar material with the script, this film makes up for it with the acting by a little girl, her lonely mother, and their colorful and ambient patrons of their little hotel and pub in Scotland. The hotel is closed for the season, but Danson makes the mother an offer she can’t refuse…they could really use the Yank’s money. Danson plays a scientist that had lost his credibility but who is now ‘volunteered’ by his University and sent to Scotland to find proof that Nessie does exist. Of course Danson’s character wants to disprove it-with an attitude problem. Even though he doesn’t believe in Nessie, there are those locals that would scuttle his hi-tech research anyway. The little girl, liking Danson’s character, trusting him, and seeing that he’d be good for her mother…she’s a bit psychic..and trusting him, takes him to enjoy her secret place. An underground cavern and its inhabitants shocks him beyond his wildest imagination. Now Danson’s character must choose between fame and glory, or leaving the Loch the way it was always meant to be…peaceful. The wrong choice and he loses the ones that he loves, and those who love him. It’s a colorful piece with wonderful acting and equally wonderful music. It is a great family movie where the ending leaves you with a warm heart and a smile. For the price of one movie ticket, you can entertain the whole family…and maybe some friends.

Anchor Bay has decided to rerelease the films in their Hammer Studios catalogue not individually, but paired up in a series of double features, each set available for the original price of only one film. And to them I extend a hearty thank you … not only for budget reasons, but for the combinations they seem to have decided upon. Stuck together here are a pair of Peter Cushing films, giving us two samples of him at work with two of the characters he is most remembered for bringing to life.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Frankenstein Created Woman/The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires! Click Here

The first film of the two we’re given in this wonderful set comes to us from 1967. Despite the cheesy and rather misleading title, “Frankenstein Created Woman” is a wonderful tale, sporting a simple but excellent story and some marvelous performances from everyone in the cast. Peter Cushing excels, as always, as Doctor Frankenstein (who’s not so villainous this time around), displaying unfailing dedication to his experiments and marvelously dry wit (check out his remarks while being questioned in the courtroom. Classic!). Showing us a softer side of Doctor F, Cushing reanimates the body of a homely, outcast girl, a suicide victim, with the soul of her lover, Hans, a young man executed for a crime he did not commit. Hans went to the guillotine rather than ruin his lady’s virtue and name her as his alibi (as they were spending the night together the night the murder took place), and after finding himself alive again, holds no other thoughts but taking revenge on the real killer(s).

It`s not a complicated tale at all, but the wonderful performances, nice sets, and striking images (such as the opening shot, as the camera looks up at the guillotine blade) make it a very memorable and enjoyable film indeed.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Frankenstein Created Woman/The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires! Click Here

But as much as I did enjoy “Frankenstein Created Woman”, I must admit that I went for this double-feature set for the second film included here, 1974’s “Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires”. In an attempt to inject new life into the struggling series, the folks of Hammer Studios took their Van Helsing franchise to Hong Kong, where they made an unusual film featuring Professor Van Helsing, Vampire Hunter (Peter Cushing, wonderful as ever) fighting more of his undead adversaries in turn of the century China. And believe me, this is one fun movie.

The land is under a terrible curse, as the peasants cringe in fear beneath a brotherhood of seven vampires, led by none other than Count Dracula himself, come all the way from Transylvania (and beneath the mask of a Chinese vampire … and no, Christopher Lee does NOT play Dracula when we see him in his true form at the beginning of the film. I understand that Lee had tired of the role and wished to move on at this point in the series). Van Helsing agrees to use his vampire slaying expertise and come to the aid of a young man named Hsi Ching, and together with Hsi Ching’s six brothers put an end to the Seven Vampire’s reign of terror.

What follows is an unusual half-martial arts/half-British gothic horror story, with armies of Chinese Zombies, Kung Fu fighting, vampire attacks, Kung Fu fighting, scenes of blood letting, and more Kung Fu fighting, until at the very last Van Helsing and Dracula face each other off for one last time (as this would prove to be the final entry to the series). Both goofy and serious at the same time (like the moment when Hsi Ching wipes his fingers off on a falling enemy’s shirt), you`ll be hard pressed to find a more interesting or unusual tale … but at the same time you can’t deny that it’s a well written, well made, and well acted film. The fight scenes are masterfully choreographed, and we even get to see the aging Mr. Cushing himself do a number of impressive stunts.

This double-feature set from Anchor Bay Entertainment doesn’t skimp out on the extras. Though there are no commentary tracks, we still get, with FCW, a nice selection of trailers plus an interesting overview of the entire Frankenstein series, narrated by British actor Oliver Reed. As for Lot7GV, we’re given both the original and American cuts of the film (where basically, for the American version, they left in all the action scenes and cut everything else out), a trailer for the American cut (sporting some [un?]intentionally hilarious narration, and an audio dramatization of the film’s story, read to us by Peter Cushing himself (great to have on while you’re doing housework, though I’m not totally sure what purpose it was originally meant to serve).

So go ahead and give this set a try. You’ll get two great movies for one great price, and you’ll have a pair of excellent films that you’ll want to revisit often and should be sure to share with friends. In addition to this, if you’re a Peter Cushing fan and are wondering where to start, this set would make an ideal beginning to your movie collection.

Carry on Carry on,

MN

Frankenstein Created Woman is one of the better of Hammer’s Frankenstein sequels, an efficient programmer that sees Peter Cushing’s Baron trapping the soul of his guillotined assistant and putting it in the body of his disfigured girlfriend, only for the wronged boy to use her to kill those who really done the crime he was executed for. There’s more build-up than payoff, but its very sedateness (indeed, almost cosiness) is part of the pleasure, and it’s hard not to warm to the Baron’s arrogance and aloofness, whether it be reading in the witness box or casually answering a policeman’s “Do you take us for fools?” with a simple “Yes.” Still, it is remarkable just how well preserved that severed head is after six months…

The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires is a much less successful hybrid combining Hammer horror and mid-70s chop socky movie as Dracula (not Christopher Lee but an inadequate John Forbes Robertson), for reasons never really explained, possesses the body of a Chinese bad guy to control six golden vampires while Cushing’s Van Helsing, on a far from successful Chinese lecture tour, finds himself teaming up with seven brothers and their one sister to rid a remote Chinese village of yada yada yada.. “Black belt against black magic” screams the trailer, and while it’s not as poor as I recalled, the only things going for it are a few okay action scenes and a magnificent display of bosom heaving from Julie Ege in one particularly memorable shot.

But it’s a masterpiece compared to the butchered US version, retitled The Seven Brothers Meet Dracula, which makes it sound like a bad Howard Keel musical. Although the original was far from dialog-heavy, a good two-thirds of the dialog has been dropped completely (in some cases you can still see the actors’ lips moving but no sound emerging). Even more bizarre is the opening two reels, which reuse much of the same footage three times in a row in three separate scenes, hoping that by flipping it around no-one will notice. The end result is a surreal experience that just washes over you.

Although I’d probably not have been tempted to buy either of the two main features, as a double-bill they make for a nicely complimentary package. Anchor Bay’s extras package on the films are good: Frankenstein comes with trailer and TV spots (for its double-bill release with The Mummy’s Shroud - “Beware the beat of the cloth-wrapped feet!”) and an episode of the World of Hamer clip show, while The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires includes both cuts of the film, the US trailer (which the narrator constantly refers to as ‘The Seven Brothers and Their One Sister Meet Dracula’!) and the old LP narrated by Peter Cushing as an audio extra.

So There it is. Hope you enjoy

This third entry in the popular “Looney Tunes Golden Collection” series looks to be the best yet, mostly because of the selection of cartoons. Volume 1 was great, but the selection was too heavily weighted in favor of a relatively short period of time (about 1948 to 1953). Volume 2 had a more diverse selection of cartoons, but had to include more Road Runner and Tweety cartoons than could comfortably be watched in one sitting. Volume 3 has the widest range of Warner Brothers cartoons yet, ranging from the debut of Porky Pig in 1935 to the end of the WB animation studio in 1963. And each disc will present a varied lineup of cartoons that can be watched from beginning to end with pleasure.

Disc 1 is another Bugs Bunny festival, including such classics as the last cartoon in Chuck Jones’s Bugs/Daffy/Elmer hunting trilogy, Bugs’s great square dance routine in “Hillbilly Hare,” and less-familiar masterpieces such as the bizarre “Rebel Rabbit.” Disc 2 concentrates on cartoons with Hollywood parodies and celebrity caricatures, ranging from Tex Avery’s great gangster-movie spoof “Thugs With Dirty Mugs” to Robert McKimson’s “The Mouse that Jack Built,” with the cast of the Jack Benny Show voicing themselves. Disc 3, “Porky and the Pigs,” mostly concentrates on WB’s longest-running star, Porky Pig, featuring a generous helping of hilarious and imaginative black-and-white cartoons by Frank Tashlin and Bob Clampett, as well as later classics like “Robin Hood Daffy.” And disc 4, “All Stars Cartoon Party,” collects some of the very best cartoons of WB’s biggest cartoon stars, including Tweety and Sylvester’s Oscar-winning “Birds Anonymous,” the debuts of Foghorn Leghorn and Pepe Le Pew, and Daffy trying to dodge the draft in “Draftee Daffy.” There are many masterpieces in this collection and few duds, a tribute to the astonishing depth of the WB cartoon catalogue.

The extras will be up to the previous high standard and then some, with new featurettes including a tribute to director Frank Tashlin; from-the-vault rarities including the unaired animation/live-action pilot PHILBERT (directed by Friz Freleng and a young Richard Donner); original storyboards; music-only tracks; and additional cartoons with characters like Bosko and Private Snafu. For the commentaries, WB has engaged a wider range of commentators this time around in addition to stalwarts Michael Barrier, Greg Ford and Jerry Beck, including superhero cartoon specialist Paul Dini commenting on Chuck Jones’s superhero cartoon parody “Super-Rabbit,” John Kricfalusi on several Bob Clampett cartoons; “Aladdin” animator Eric Goldberg on two Jones cartoons; Joe Dante on a cartoon by one of his biggest influences, Frank Tashlin; and more. As long as WB avoids the encoding and DVNR problems that afflicted some of the cartoons on the previous set, this should be the best Looney Tunes DVD collection ever — until set # 4.

Once remarkable shocker is dated now but level-headed retains the unpleasantness and emotional tugs that must have riveted audiences in 1948. Olivia de Havilland gives an Oscar nominated performance as Virginia, a woman confined to a region mental hospital after a mental breakdown. As she struggles to understand what happened to her and win her sanity through the kindliness and patience of a very conception doctor, we are treated to the horrors and inhumanity of a situation hospital circa 1948. Hissably imperfect nurses, shock treatments, abominable food, overcrowding, ice baths and finally “the snake pit”—you name it and Virginia goes through it. Luckily, she has a very loving husband who waits for her to “reach home”. de Havilland is obliging and if the film (and performances) seems dated, this was 1948 and mental illness was a modern frontier being brought out into the inaugurate and frankly explored by Hollywood. It’s possible to imagine a residence hospital being this horrific in the behind 40’s. Supporting cast is splendid but Celeste Holm is wasted in a itsy-bitsy fraction as a fellow patient and disappears altogether. The finale, state at a dance for the patients, features the traditional tearjerker “Goin’ Home” (which, incidentally, is about dying) done to effectively emotional heights about finally being released and “going home”. This film is a classic of it’s kind and is given a stunning DVD treatment and I very powerful recommend it for movie buffs and fans of de Havilland. I level-headed accumulate parts of it intense and disturbing, so if it composed has that conclude after all these years I can only imagine what it must have been like in 1948.

Olivia deHavilland shows her acting chops in “The Snake Pit,” a harrowing recognize at mental illness, circa 1948. Possess me, if you have to go insane, impartial be thankful we’re in the Novel Millennium, and not in post-War America! “The Snake Pit” is wonderfully acted by all concerned, but it is deHavilland’s showcase, and she does a favorable job. In fact, I was quite impressed with her range and dramatic ability…this is no “Melanie” from “Gone With the Wind!” Alas, “The Snake Pit” is extremely dated, but I recommend it for deHavilland’s startling performance. Really, it’s extremely new to sight such power in an actress from the “obsolete” school of demure acting. Livvy was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award and certainly deserved to regain, in my humble plan. She’s considerable better in this than in “The Heiress” (though I admire that film, too, for different reasons) . Check this out–you won’t be disappointed!
